The principles behind every action
At the heart of every Sarvodaya Shramadana Society is a simple belief - meaningful community development begins with the goodness within every person. Our actions are guided by principles that nurture loving-kindness, compassion, selfless joy and equanimity, while encouraging people to live, work and grow together for the wellbeing of all.
Path to Personality Awakening (Four Sublime Abodes)
Aiming at liberating the goodness that is in every person
Metta – Loving-Kindness
Respect for all life
We approach every person with kindness, dignity and respect. Metta inspires our societies to build relationships based on understanding, care and respect for all forms of life.
Karuna – Compassion
Turning concern into meaningful action
Compassion is more than feeling for others. It calls us to understand the causes of suffering and take thoughtful, constructive action to reduce suffering, fear and grief within our communities.
Muditha – Altruistic Joy
Finding joy in the happiness of others
We celebrate the progress, wellbeing and achievements of others. Muditha encourages a spirit of selfless service where the happiness and success of one person becomes a source of joy for the whole community.
Upekkha – Equanimity
Standing with balance through gain and loss
We remain steady and balanced in the face of gain or loss, wealth or poverty, fame or blame, comfort or suffering. Upekkha enables community members to act with wisdom, fairness and resilience.
Principles for Collective Community Action
Sathara Sangraha Vasthu
The strength of a community is built not only through what we believe, but through how we relate to one another and how we act together.
The four principles of Sathara Sangraha Vasthu guide our societies towards inclusive, harmonious and sustainable community life.
Dana
Sharing according to need
We believe in sharing our time, knowledge, resources and abilities according to the needs of others-ensuring that no one is left behind.
Priya Vachana
Words that connect and uplift
We communicate with kindness, clarity and understanding. Pleasant and intelligible communication creates trust, strengthens relationships and brings people together.
Artha Charya
Engagement in right livelihood
We encourage meaningful and responsible participation in livelihoods that contribute to individual wellbeing, community development and a sustainable future.
Samanathmatha
Standing together through shared responsibility
We work alongside one another with understanding and participation. By sharing responsibilities and experiences, we strengthen the bonds that hold our communities together.
From values to Action
Our principles are not simply ideals - they are a way of living. Metta teaches us to care, Karuna moves us to act with compassion, Muditha inspires us to share in the happiness and success of others, while Upekkha guides us with balance and wisdom. Through Dana, Priya Vachana, Artha Charya and Samanatthata, these values are transformed into everyday practices that strengthen relationships, empower individuals, foster collective responsibility and inspire meaningful community action. Together, we transform values into action - and action into lasting community wellbeing.
Development begins by understanding what people truly need to live with dignity.
The 10 Basic Human Needs
For Sarvodaya, community development is not simply about building infrastructure or completing projects. It begins with understanding the basic needs that shape people’s everyday lives and creating the conditions in which individuals, families, and communities can work together to meet them.
The Ten Basic Human Needs provide an important foundation for this approach. They guide communities to look beyond immediate challenges and consider the wider conditions needed for a healthy, dignified, peaceful, and fulfilling life.
