Our Societies
A Sarvodaya Shramadana Society is more than a community organisation. It is a space where people come together to recognise what they already have—their knowledge, skills, time, labour, resources and collective strength—and use them for the wellbeing of their community.
Rather than depending entirely on solutions brought from outside, communities are encouraged to understand their own needs, recognise their own potential, and work together to find solutions. Every person has a role to play and every contribution has value. The future of a child, the ideas of a young person, the leadership of a woman, the experience of an older person, and the everyday contribution of each person in the village can all become part of the community’s strength.
But a society is built on more than activities and projects. It is built through relationships. The connections created when people work, learn and share together continue long after a particular activity has ended. Over time, these relationships grow into trust, cooperation, responsibility and self-reliance—creating a stronger foundation for the community’s future.
Within this journey, the strength of one becomes a source of strength for another. A family’s progress can encourage another family. The knowledge gained in one village can benefit another. An experience shared by one community can open a new possibility for another. In this way, the strength created within one society can reach beyond its own boundaries.
For Sarvodaya, “the awakening of all” is not simply a vision. It is a value that becomes meaningful when it is lived through people’s everyday actions—when individuals recognise their own worth, stand together, take responsibility, and work for the wellbeing of their community.
This is why Sarvodaya Shramadana Societies are more than structures within villages. They are living expressions of people’s collective strength—where leadership emerges, cooperation grows, and self-reliance takes root from within the community.
